Home Description
Description of the home
I just signed a third 12 month lease on a beautiful 104 year old Queenslander cottage in the forest on the ferny fringe of north-west Brisbane until mid October 2025, but now I need a new and awesome housemate in Arana Hills in Magandjin/Brisbane from December 1., for a rolling yearly lease.
The house is 800m across the creek from the train station, and a 3 minute walk from the shopping centre (Coles, Aldi), with the bus stop too. Loads of great cheap restaurants and a cafe in walking distance. The Kedron Brook Bike/floodway is very close, but we are 19 metres above the highest flood line, and well protected from storms.
As much as a rental can be a home, we have a “good” landlord who wants me there as long as I want. Which is great because there is a lovely community around us. The forest garden has to be seen to be believed – it is a little slice of paradise. We do have to do a bit of garden maintenance which would suit someone willing to put some effort in – bushcare style.

I am looking for someone who lives ethically whilst still working to bring about a better world. Someone friendly that will say hello. I am very community minded, but also value my own space and independence. I am lovingly neurospicy, but not at all a difficult roomie. I enjoy deep yarns, but also am totally respectful of the need for quiet. I believe in a world governed by consent in all things, embodied in the boundary setting of a cat (and having a inside cat or other clean inside pet (no dogs due to no fences) is pre-approved, but has to be an inside, desexed cat due to our amazing wildlife – we have a large wire planthouse/ cat run in the backyard, but you will need to make it cat proof and be aware of our resident hawk and eagle).
I am looking for a non-smoking, non substance abusing housemate. No heavy/day drinkers. Friendly and comradely, but with our own lives. Not seeking an intimate partner. I am 48, so I would prefer someone between 35 and 55 – but I am open to intergenerational housing for the right person – and I have good uncle energy for my younger friends. Someone that respects and defends all flavours of the humans that respect others. Someone that believes in community care, mutual aid and disability friendly. Someone that is open to active consent and consensus on daily interactions. LGBTIQA+ friendly, but someone that doesn’t have a problem with having a partner stay occasionally, with respect to each others needs for peace. I get on with most people, but please no racists, conspiritualists or antivax people.
Someone that has their own life and work, and can reliably pay all the shared bills ahead of time, especially rent. In past houses we have always built up a few weeks ahead of rent in the house account – just in case of bank or payment failures, emergency or illness.
Its an old house, so somebody who is happy to split the housework for a clean space, and help with garden maintenance (though I often do that to switch off from my work brain).
Someone who respects quiet time, but also is happy to share a meal, a drink, a table and a yarn, and an occasional weekend fire or music out the back with friends.
